The Light That Never Goes Out うつつの光、うつる夜

The protagonist, Zenkichi, is a young man who, as a father and husband, made a living by performing magic lantern shows called “Utsushi-E” to entertain the common people in early 19th century Japan. This system uses candlelight instead of electricity to project images on a screen.

Suddenly, one night, a candlelight flash illuminates the show’s images, and his tools are instantly set on fire by accident. Saddened, Zenkichi gives the burned glass plate to his son, who comes to cherish it.

But Zenkichi’s sadness becomes despair, when his wife and son disappear, only to be found dead. Like ghosts, the figures from “Utsushi-E” come to life to tell him, that his family has been murdered. Zenkichi, with the help of these strange spirits, sets out to find the truth… and the murderer.
